He is one of the most favorite cartoon characters in Russia. Чебурашка was created by a famous Russian children's writer Eduard Uspensky in 1966.

Although his name ends with the letter -a, Чебурашка was created as a character of male gender. This is why his grammatical gender will also be masculine, regardless of the fact that the name ends with -a. Biological gender in Russian is more important than grammatical, therefore if a noun ends with -а or -я but names a person who is a male, it will still be considered a masculine gender noun. For example:
