Introduction to Russian:          Lesson 30

       ТЫ или ВЫ?

YOU (informal) or YOU (formal)?

The pronoun ты means you and describes one person in informal situations. The pronoun вы can also be used as you to address one person, but only in formal situations, politely addressing a person who is either your teacher, your manager, or an adult who is not your family member.

Teacher and Student

For example, you would address your teacher as вы (formal). Your teacher will respond to you personally using the pronoun ты (singular) and will address two or more students and the entire class as вы (plural).
