Introduction to Russian: Lesson 1
Video 1, Activity 2
In the video, Anna said: "Я - Анна." It means "I am Anna".
The letter я makes the sound [ya] as in the English word yacht. It is the very last letter in the Russian alphabet. Click the orange button to hear its main sound again: я . Doesn't it look like the English letter R backwards, as if it was reflected in a mirror?
Well, I usually see myself in a mirror, and the English word I is translated into Russian as я. The interesting thing you want to remember is that Russians capitalize this pronoun only if it is the first word in the sentence. In English, we like to spell this word as the capital letter I everywhere in the sentence. Russians do not capitalize the pronoun я if it's not the very first word in the sentence.
